Little Miss South Carolina is one of South Carolina's oldest pageant systems for children and young adults. It was founded in 1970 by the late Linda Floyd in Sumter, South Carolina. Over $37,000 in scholarships were awarded at the 2007 state pageant, in addition to the beautiful crowns, scepters, trophies, monogrammed banners, crown cases, bicycles and other prizes. Over $38,000 in scholarships will be awarded at the 2008 state pageant!
We had 850 contestants participate in the 2007 LMSC preliminaries and 200 local title holders represented all areas of the state in June. The LMSC pageant promotes community service and academic excellence as well as encouraging poise and positive self-esteem in our contestants. Good sportsmanship is a must at all LMSC pageants. We also stress age-appropriateness in hair, make-up and dress for all ages. Our judges are told to judge the child and not the clothes. On the state level, contestants ages 7-19, have a private interview with the judges. Interview counts as 50% of their total beauty score and therefore is a very important deciding factor in determining the top finalists in the age divisions.
LMSC is a proud partner of Palmetto Health Children's Hospital and donates a portion of the ad sales from the pageant to the hospital each year. Our winners make numerous appearances and entertain throughout the state, along with being involved with the Festival of Trees at the State Museum, a fundraiser for the Children's Hospital. We have also been granted an audience with Gov. Mark Sanford for the past 4 years to discuss community service and education. LMSC donated over $13,000 to Palmetto Health Children's Hospital during the 2007 pageant. Since we partnered with the hospital in 2002, we have raised over $55,000!
2007 LMSC finals were shown on ETV's SC Channel, July 7th and July 15th. We believe that we are the only children's pageant in SC to be shown on statewide television and we are very proud of that!
